Mattel Studios Chief Says "We All Want to See a Barbie Sequel"

Following the resounding success of the live-action Barbie movie starring Margot Robbie, released in 2023, a sequel seemed like the obvious next step.

However, speculation suggests that the main cast of the film directed by Greta Gerwig was not satisfied with the offers made, causing a stalemate in negotiations.

If a sequel doesn't go into development by December, Warner Bros. will lose the adaptation rights to the material, which will revert to Mattel. The company, in turn, will not be able to use any of the material produced by Warner Bros., which would cause a complete reboot of Barbie in cinemas.

During the Toronto Film Festival , Mattel Studios head Robbie Brenner spoke about a possible sequel. "We all want to see a Barbie sequel. I want one too. I'm sure that, at some point, there will be one", she said, according to Deadline .

"Right now, we're focused on and producing a Barbie animated film with Chris Meledandri", Brenner stated. "That's very exciting, and yes, we will continue doing other Barbie projects."

The lack of urgency in Brenner's statement suggests that the sequel to the film starring Margot Robbie may already be a closed chapter for Mattel.
