Avengers: Secret Wars promises to take Marvel character crossovers to a whole new level. Kevin Feige, the studio president and producer of the film, said the movie will feature “breathtaking moments” as it brings together characters fans have followed for years.
Feige made the statement recently during the republication of Jonathan Hickman’s 2015 Secret Wars comic. Based on information shared by The Direct, Marvel intends to do with the film what it usually does with its adaptations: draw elements from the original story and turn them into something of its own. “We take and choose elements from the rich nearly 90-year history of Marvel comics and make films that honor the source material but become something completely different”, he explained.
Feige also said that the MCU’s story will make use of different characters and events built throughout the Multiverse Saga. “We’re going to take the threads left by Hickman and Esad Ribic and everyone who came before them and weave a new story inspired by the vast tapestry of our comics and films”, he said.
The executive was more direct when talking about the main draw of Secret Wars. “We’re going to bring together the characters we know and love in breathtaking moments that we, as fans, have always dreamed of but never seen happen”, he said.
Beyond the major crossovers, Feige highlighted Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., as one of the central figures of the plot. “We’re going to summon Doctor Doom, the greatest villain in the history of the Marvel universe, to become a central piece of this story”, he stated.
It is expected that Avengers: Secret Wars will bring together even more characters from different Marvel universes. Avengers: Doomsday will already put the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four together for the first time, but Secret Wars could expand that crossover and bring back familiar faces from other phases of the franchise. In addition, the film is expected to introduce new heroes who will play an important role in Phase 7 of the MCU.
As the story is expected to involve Battleworld, a reality formed from the fragments of the Multiverse, the film opens the door for appearances that once seemed unlikely. Among the possible returns are Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man, who, according to reports, would have important roles in the plot. These details, however, have not yet been confirmed by Marvel.
