Gon and Killua Return to 'Hunter x Hunter' Manga After Nearly 15 Years

The Hunter x Hunter manga has finally ended one of the most significant hiatuses in its history — and it has nothing to do with Yoshihiro Togashi's work being published in Japan. The manga’s most recent chapter, 414, brought protagonists Gon and Killua back after nearly 15 years away.

The current Hunter x Hunter arc, titled Succession War, centers on Kurapika, the duo’s ally from the beginning of the series. Part of the story takes place aboard the Black Whale ship and in the Kakin Empire, which explains Gon and Killua’s absence.

Chapter 414 of Hunter x Hunter continues the chaos of the Succession War arc, where several major plans are constantly being devised and unfolding among many different characters — and Kurapika’s situation is no exception. He is running out of options to move forward, since the Succession War must end in 49 days and a new prince must be crowned before the Black Whale reaches the Dark Continent; however, he hopes to save a newborn prince amid all this turmoil.

Needing more Hunters to protect this young prince, Kurapika mentions having trusted friends capable of carrying out that protection. It is at this moment that we see Gon and Killua again after a long period. The two are in completely different places, having followed separate paths since the last time they appeared together, but it seems the manga is about to bring them back to the center of the action as part of what comes next.

Hunter x Hunter began publication in 1999, telling the story of a young boy who aspires to become a Hunter, like his missing father. In the series’ mythology, Hunters are people licensed to access locations and seek treasures that are unreachable for ordinary people.

Over the years, Hunter x Hunter has gone on several breaks due to Togashi’s health condition. He suffers from a severe spinal issue, even writing on social media that he had trouble performing simple everyday tasks.
