After drawing attention in the official competition at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, the blockbuster Hope also proved its strength at the box office. South Korea’s contender for the upcoming awards season surpassed the mark of 2 million moviegoers in just five days in the country’s theaters.
Released on July 15, the feature achieved the milestone faster than any other film released in South Korea in 2026.
Hope opens in theaters on September 9.

The film’s official synopsis reveals a mix of drama and science fiction: "A mysterious discovery is made on the outskirts of the remote harbor town. The residents find themselves in a desperate fight for survival against something they have never encountered before."
The cast brings together South Korean and Western names: Hwang Jung-min (12.12: The Day), Zo In-sung (Moving) and Hoyeon (Squid Game) star alongside Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class), Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl), Taylor Russell (Bones and All) and Cameron Britton (Mindhunter).
