Unreal Engine 6 is being developed with the help of AI in its programming. The graphics engine, promised as the evolution of one of the most widely adopted tools in the current gaming industry, was the subject of an interview with Marcus Wassmer, vice president of development at Epic Games.

"Yes, we are vibe-coding things. That means our engineers are no longer writing the bulk of the code, but they are still guiding the tools to get the architectural result we want", he told This Week In Video Games.

"We’re not ‘one-shotting’ the engine; we’re iterating with AI to ship features developers want and keep the engine within the memory, performance, and scalability envelopes", he added.

Technology is still viewed with suspicion by much of the gaming industry, but Wassmer asserted that they are more concerned with moving too slowly than with skepticism surrounding AI. Ironically, CEO Tim Sweeney had already stated a year ago that Epic did not use AI for development, revealing a considerable shift in stance.

In practice, this peculiarity of Unreal Engine 6 means that, in a way, a large portion of the games released from now on will be made with some trace of AI in their design.
