Created by Michael Davis, Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, and Derek T. Dingle, Virgil Hawkins is a teenager who gains powers during the event known as the Big Bang, which transforms him and others into "Bang Babies" with superhuman abilities. The character rose to prominence with his own animated series in the 2000s, voiced by Phil LaMarr, and also appeared in Young Justice.

The new series marks Static’s return to comics after his recent reintegration into the DC Universe, continuing the story of the hero who became one of Milestone’s defining icons.
