During the red carpet at the BFI London Film Festival, Bella Ramsey talked to ScreenRant about the shift in focus coming in the third season of The Last of Us .
"I'm really excited for people to see Kaitlyn as Abby. I've had some time off this year. I'm excited for people to see it, and I'm excited to see it too, because I haven't seen anything they've done recently. To see Kaitlyn rock it, be cool, and kind of lead the charge, lead the series," said Ramsey.
The statement confirms that the third season will place Abby, played by Kaitlyn Dever, at the center of the narrative, leaving Ellie in the background. Production began in March in British Columbia, Canada, and is ongoing.
Dever joined the series in the second season. Her character seeks revenge after Joel (Pedro Pascal) kills her father, who was attempting to operate on Ellie. Abby's mission was successful, which had profound ramifications for the rest of the story.
The second season finale ended with Abby, gun in hand, confronting Ellie. A shot was fired and the camera cut to black, without revealing whether Ellie was hit. The final seconds of the episode returned to the first day in Seattle, indicating that the audience will see Abby's story from the beginning, something Ramsey reiterated in the interview.
Everything you need to know about HBO's The Last of Us
The HBO series is written and directed by Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) and Neil Druckmann, director of the Naughty Dog games. The second season begins telling the story of The Last of Us Part II, the second game in the franchise. This one, unlike the first game which occupied the entire first season, will be adapted over more than one season.
New additions to the cast include Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, a soldier seeking revenge for those she loves; Isabela Merced as Dina, Ellie's love interest; and Young Mazino as Jesse, with whom Dina has a past. All three characters are crucial to the game's story and to the series as well.
Danny Ramirez (Top Gun: Maverick), Tati Gabrielle (Uncharted: Off the Map), Ariela Barer (How to Blow Up a Pipeline), and Spencer Lord (Riverdale) have also been cast in the new season of the series. They play Abby's friends in the story. Ramirez is the optimistic Manny, while Gabrielle is Nora, a doctor haunted by her past. Barer is Mel, a young doctor dealing with the reality of tribalism, and Lord plays Owen, a kind man in a warrior's body.
Finally, the second season also features Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction) as Isaac, the same character he played in the game.
The Last of Us already has its first two seasons available in their entirety on HBO Max.
