The first season of Lanterns came to an end with record viewership. The final episode, shown on Sunday (5) on HBO and HBO Max, attracted 10.5 million viewers globally and 7.2 million in the United States over three days of multiplatform viewing, according to Nielsen data and internal figures from Warner Bros. Discovery.
The performance marks the series' largest audience both globally and in the US. Globally, viewership increased by 13% compared to the premiere, which registered 9.3 million viewers.
In the United States, viewership grew by 9% over the 6.6 million viewers of the premiere. For comparison, the penultimate episode, the seventh, had garnered 7 million viewers in the US in its first three days.
Overall, Lanterns has averaged 19.3 million global viewers, solidifying its position among the top five HBO premieres in the platform's history. The audience for the first episode doubled compared to its opening week and is now approaching 30 million viewers, as the series gained viewers throughout its eight episodes.
The show hasn't been renewed for a second season yet, but the ending sets the stage for Aaron Pierre's John Stewart to appear in Man of Tomorrow.
Everything you need to know about Lanterns
The series follows a young John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and a veteran Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) as they become embroiled in a dark, earthly mystery while investigating a murder in the heart of the USA. It's speculated that the murder victim is a member of the Green Lantern Corps, a kind of galactic police force, and that's how Stewart will acquire the ring that grants members of the group the power to create objects made of green light.
The series cast also includes Garrett Dillahunt (No Country for Old Men), Kelly Macdonald (Boardwalk Empire), Cary Christopher (Weapons), and Paula Patton (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol), as well as Ulrich Thomsen as the villain Sinestro.
Nathan Fillion will appear as Guy Gardner, one of the Green Lanterns – a role he previously played in the Superman movie. With eight episodes confirmed, the production is helmed by Damon Lindelof (Lost, Watchmen), Chris Mundy (Ozark), and Tom King.
