It’s not new that J.K. Rowling’s statements about gender identity and trans communities have been condemned even by stars from the Harry Potter franchise itself. Now it was Bel Powley’s turn, the star of the new HBO series, to comment on the matter.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Powley, who plays Petunia Dursley (Harry Potter’s Muggle aunt), revealed that she “strongly disagrees with J.K. Rowling’s views on gender.”

“I think the trans community deserves safety and dignity and respect, and total acceptance. But I love Harry Potter. I grew up with the books. I’m from that first generation of readers and, again, I adore magic and spookiness,” she concluded.

The Harry Potter series, whose first season will adapt The Philosopher’s Stone, premieres at Christmas 2026.
