DC Series 'Booster Gold' to Move Forward with Different Showrunner

According to an exclusive report from The Wrap, Booster Gold from DC Studios and HBO will not move forward with writer David Jenkins’ vision, but the project will remain in development with a new creative team. The announcement came from Jenkins himself, who posted on social media that his version of the time-traveling hero will not be moving ahead.

"My Booster Gold won't be moving forward," Jenkins wrote on Threads, referencing a statement from Mahershala Ali about the end of his involvement with Marvel’s Blade film. "Can’t improve on Mahershala’s beautiful statement, so I'll just apply it here as well."

Despite Jenkins’ departure, the project remains part of DC Studios’ plans and is now looking for a new showrunner. The series still has no actor cast in the lead role. The news comes one day after Marvel canceled Magnum’s return for a second season, prompting Jenkins to comment: "I’ve lost the thread. Don't understand the purpose of a streaming service."

The writer, best known for creating the pirate comedy Our Flag Means Death at HBO, was hired in July 2025 to write the pilot and serve as showrunner if the series was greenlit. In June, he had celebrated turning in the script, calling it one of his favorite pilots on BlueSky.

Booster Gold was one of the first projects announced by James Gunn and Peter Safran when they took creative control of DC Studios, as part of the first chapter of the new universe, titled "Gods and Monsters." The original premise follows Michael Carter, a loser from the future who uses basic technology to travel back to the present and pose as a superhero. "It’s basically Impostor Syndrome as a superhero," Gunn said at the time.

Created by Dan Jurgens in 1986, Booster Gold is a former football player from the future who, after being caught fixing games, steals equipment from a museum — including his robot companion Skeets — and travels through time to pose as a hero in the era of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman.
