Juliette Lewis Says Classic 'Cape Fear' Score "Was in the Air" on Remake Set

Few scores are as instantly recognizable as that of Cape Fear. Composed by Bernard Herrmann for the 1962 film and reused by Martin Scorsese in his 1991 remake, the music returns once again in the series produced for Apple TV.

According to Juliette Lewis, however, the theme goes far beyond post-production.

In an exclusive interview with Omelete, the actress said the atmosphere created by the series was so intense that the actors could practically “hear” the score during filming: “You’re absolutely right. There’s a perfect marriage between the script and the music. You can almost hear the score because the drama is so dense. And it’s dense because it’s in the writing and in the way everything was filmed.”

Lewis believes the entire team worked to preserve the visual and emotional identity built throughout the story’s different versions. “Everyone carried that aesthetic on set. Even when I meet Javier’s Max Cady for the first time and I’m spying on him while he’s spying on someone else, you can almost hear that ‘da-da-da-da.’”, she said.

For the actress, the score stopped being just musical accompaniment and became part of the work’s very essence. “It lives and breathes. It’s woven into the fabric of Cape Fear.”

Lewis also revealed a conversation she had with the series creator, Nick Antosca, about the use of classical music in this new adaptation: “I was really happy when he explained to me that they would use the same theme, but only as a starting point. You can’t overdo the music. That’s exactly what shows how rich the drama is.”

By preserving one of the most striking elements of the previous films without relying exclusively on it, the new version aims to honor Bernard Herrmann’s legacy while building an identity of its own for the series.

The story follows attorneys Anna (Amy Adams) and Tom Bowden (Patrick Wilson), whose peaceful life falls apart when Max Cady (Javier Bardem), someone they helped convict, is released from prison determined to get revenge.

The production is led and produced by Nick Antosca, with Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg — director and producer of the 1991 film — serving as executive producers.

Inspired by the novel The Executioners and the previous adaptations, the series is a production of UCP (Universal Content Productions) and Amblin Television. The pilot episode is directed by Morten Tyldum.

The 10-episode miniseries wraps up on Friday, July 31.
