WARNING: Spoilers for The End of Oak Street below!
The arrival of The End of Oak Street in theaters has unveiled the mystery behind one of the most surprising movies of the year: as shown in the pre-release trailers, the feature follows a suburban family in the 1980s (led by Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor) whose neighborhood is invaded by dinosaurs.
But where do the monsters come from, and what happens at the end of The End of Oak Street? Omelete brings you all the spoilers below.
Where do the dinosaurs in The End of Oak Street come from?
The film by David Robert Mitchell (It Follows) reveals that, behind its curious plot, there is a time anomaly: the Platt family’s neighborhood is basically “sucked” into a wormhole and ends up in the Jurassic era.
Later in The End of Oak Street, we learn that the phenomenon is contained to a few blocks around the family’s house, and that this atemporal anomaly is actually a two-way street: a piece of prehistoric forest was also transported to the 1980s.
Who dies in The End of Oak Street?
At one point in The End of Oak Street, the couple Denise (Hathaway) and Greg (McGregor) find a glowing, mysterious sphere inside a neighbor’s house, theorizing that it may transport them back to their own time.
Unfortunately, Greg is devoured by a dinosaur a few scenes later. Alone with her children Audrey (Maisy Stella) and Brian (Christian Convery), as well as their young orphaned neighbor Jeanette (Jordan Alexa Davies), Denise tries to find another sphere to escape this nightmare.
How does The End of Oak Street end?
In the third act of The End of Oak Street, the battered main family finally manages to return to the 1980s. What they realize, however, is that they have gone back in time to a few minutes before the temporal anomaly happened.
Thinking quickly, Denise runs to a payphone and calls her husband. Remembering that he has been working side jobs as a pizza delivery driver to supplement their income, she decides to place an order and thus bring him to safety without having to explain the whole situation.
It works, and the Platt family tearfully reunites. The final sequence of The End of Oak Street shows that Denise still had time to save some of her neighbors, that the dinosaurs transported to the 1980s had to be put down, and that the protagonist wrote a book about her story.
