'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' Could Have Second Biggest Opening of All Time

According to GlobalBoxOffice, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is projected to gross $800 million during its worldwide opening weekend, which would make it the second biggest opening in cinema history, behind only Avengers: Endgame. The film has reportedly already surpassed $60 million in domestic pre-sales and $120 million worldwide.

Not everyone, however, is betting on a number that high. According to Deadline, the domestic opening should land between $180 million and $190 million – well below the more than $300 million the film would need to earn in the U.S. alone to reach the global $800 million mark. Variety also reported conservative estimates, in the $180-190 million range in the American market.

If confirmed, the $800 million opening would surpass milestones such as Avengers: Infinity War ($640 million) and Spider-Man: No Way Home ($600 million), becoming the second biggest opening in history, trailing only Avengers: Endgame, with $1.2 billion.

In addition to Tom Holland returning as the lead, Jacob Batalon will once again play Ned, and Zendaya returns for the new Spider-Man movie as MJ. New additions include Sadie Sink (Stranger Things), confirmed for a still-unspecified role (though heavily speculated to be Jean Grey).

Another confirmed cast member is Jon Bernthal as the Punisher, marking the hero's debut in Marvel films. In addition, Mark Ruffalo is in the movie as Hulk and will transform, for the first time in the MCU, into Gray Hulk, a larger and more dangerous version of the giant.

The official synopsis for Brand New Day has been released:  "It's a BRAND NEW DAY for Peter Parker. Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn’t remember him—and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him—sparks a change in Peter he may not have the power to control. But that transformation might also be the only thing that can stop a shocking new threat to the city and those he loves - a powerful villain no one can even see. The world may have forgotten Peter Parker, but he hasn’t forgotten them."

Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) is directing the project. Erik Sommers and Chris McKenna, who wrote Spider-Man: No Way Home, are also responsible for the upcoming film.
