Universal Pictures will kick off its 2027 release calendar with River, a new horror film from Blumhouse and the producers of Obsession and Backrooms. The film has released its first trailer, which depicts a family trip turned nightmare: three estranged siblings reunite to scatter their father's ashes on a remote river, but become trapped in a broken-down boat and are pursued by a masked figure. With no cell phone signal and nowhere to run, they must fight for survival.
Starring Jane Levy (Evil Dead), Jessica Rothe (Happy Death Day), and Max Mattern , River marks Joshua Giuliano 's feature film directorial debut. The film garnered attention during its screening at the Midnight Madness section of the 2026 Toronto Film Festival and was acquired by Universal and Blumhouse Atomic Monster.
The production will be released in U.S. theaters on January 15, 2027.
