Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew Is Netflix’s Most Expensive Movie, Reporter Says
Netflix is betting big on Greta Gerwig’s Narnia adaptation, which has become the most expensive film in the company’s history

We already know that Greta Gerwig’s The Chronicles of Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew for Netflix is a major investment… but the scale of that bet is still impressive: according to journalist Matt Belloni, from the podcast The Town, he heard that the feature is the most expensive film in the platform’s history. That suggests a budget above US$ 320 million, surpassing the streamer’s current internal record.
For comparison, the streaming giant’s biggest-budget productions—The Electric State (US$ 320 million), The Irishman (US$ 225 million), and Red Notice and The Gray Man (both at US$ 200 million)—all fall short of the new Narnia project.

Gerwig’s film will adapt The Magician’s Nephew, the book that tells the story of events in the Narnia universe before Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy (the protagonists of the original film trilogy) were even born.
The story follows young Digory (newcomer David McKenna) and his neighbor Polly (Beatrice Campbell, from The Phoenician Scheme) as they venture into a magical wood that provides access to other worlds.
The cast also includes Emma Mackey (Sex Education) as Jadis, the White Witch—a role played by Tilda Swinton in the previous films—along with Carey Mulligan (Maestro), Denise Gough (Andor), and Daniel Craig (007).
The film’s theatrical run will also be backed by IMAX, meaning the giant-screen format will get priority when it comes to showing Gerwig’s movie.
The film will be released in theaters on February 12, 2027. It will arrive on the streaming platform on April 2, 2027, and exclusive IMAX preview screenings will take place on February 10, 2027.
