Michael 2 will receive $30.8 million in tax incentives from the state of California to help finance its production. The Lionsgate film is among 35 productions selected in the latest round of benefits approved by the California Film Commission, which will distribute a total of $226 million in incentives.
It's worth remembering that the first film, Michael, also received state support, receiving $21 million in tax credits before surpassing $1 billion at the worldwide box office. For the sequel, the incentive will be even greater proportionally: California will cover 35% of eligible production costs, while the first film received a benefit equivalent to 17.5%.
Everything you need to know about Michael
Directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) and written by John Logan (Gladiator), Michael follows the King of Pop from the Jackson 5 years to the beginning of his solo career — the idea is for the story to continue in a second feature if Michael proves to be a box office success, which is exactly what has been happening.
Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson's nephew, plays him in the film. The cast also includes Colman Domingo and Nia Long as the pop star's parents, Miles Teller as the protagonist's agent, and Laura Harrier, Kat Graham and Derek Luke.
