'Digger' Is Expected to Lose $250 Million During Its Theater Run
A new report states that 'Digger' is on its way to be the biggest flop of 2026.
Digger might turn out to be one of the biggest box office flops in Hollywood. According to a report by The Wrap, Tom Cruise's latest feature film is likely to lose up to $250 million when it finishes its theater run, making it the biggest box office fail for the actor.
A previous Variety report had already predicted that the film wouldn't make more than $12 million in its first weekend. Internationally, the forecast was between $15 million and $20 million. It has, however, made only $8.7 million domestically and $11.8 overseas so far.
The report also states that Skydance executives are "shocked" that the movie didn't attract as much public interest as Verity, the thriller starring Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson that dominated the weekend. Digger, which has been touted as a possible contender for the 2027 Oscars, had an estimated budget of at least $125 million.
Everything you need to know about Digger
In the movie directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Cruise plays Digger Rockwell, an oil tycoon who ends up triggering an ecological catastrophe and must try to repair the damage he caused. The story revolves around three forces: grief, power, and responsibility.
In addition to Cruise, the cast also includes Sandra Hüller, Emma D'Arcy, Riz Ahmed, Sophie Wilde, Jesse Plemons, and John Goodman. Digger is Iñárritu's first work since The Revenant (2015) and Birdman (2014), both Oscar winners.
Digger arrived in theaters on October 2nd.
