Posthumous Film 'Making Marie Antoinette' by Eleanor Coppola Gets Release Date

The documentary Making Marie Antoinette, directed by filmmaker Eleanor Coppola and produced by her daughter, Sofia Coppola, has received a release date. The feature will arrive exclusively on MUBI on November 6 as part of the celebrations for the 20th anniversary of the film Marie Antoinette (2006), directed by Sofia and starring Kirsten Dunst and Jason Schwartzman.

Filmed by Eleanor during the production of Marie Antoinette, the documentary brings together around 80 hours of never-before-seen behind-the-scenes footage. The material shows the film’s production process, including the work of costume designer Milena Canonero and Sofia’s experience as a young director.

Eleanor Coppola is voiced by Oscar nominee Diane Lane, who reads excerpts from the filmmaker’s diaries about her experiences on set and her relationship with her daughter. Eleanor died in 2024, and Sofia completed the project using her mother’s footage and records.
