The South Korean film Hope became the biggest opening for a South Korean film in the United States, grossing $1.1 million on its opening day, September 9.
The film also surpassed the 2 million viewer mark in just five days in South Korea, a feat achieved faster than any other release in the territory in 2026.
Hope the country's entry for the upcoming awards season and attracted attention in the official competition at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival.

The official synopsis of the film, directed by Na Hong-Jin, reveals a blend of drama and science fiction: " In Hope Harbor, a remote village near the Demilitarized Zone, police chief Bum-seok receives disturbing reports from local residents that a tiger has been terrorizing the area. When panic grips the village, Bum-seok is forced to confront a reality beyond imagination. "
The cast brings together South Korean and Western names: Hwang Jung-min (12.12: The Day), Zo In-sung (In Motion) and Hoyeon (Round 6) star, alongside Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class), Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl), Taylor Russell (To the Bone) and Cameron Britton (Mindhunter).
Hope opens in theaters on October 8th.
