Everything you need to know about True Detective

The crime anthology series, initially created by Nic Pizzolatto, became known largely for casting major movie stars. Directed by Cary Fukunaga, the first season, winner of five Emmys, starred Matthew McConaughey (The Gentlemen) and Woody Harrelson (The Hunger Games) investigating a series of seemingly ritualistic murders in Louisiana and remains one of HBO's most celebrated productions to this day.

The second, less celebrated season, brought Rachel McAdams (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness), Colin Farrell (Penguin), Vince Vaughn (In the Shadow of the Law), and Taylor Kitsch (John Carter) to a story about corruption and the United States railroad system in Los Angeles. The third season starred Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) and Stephen Dorf (Blade) and regained some admiration with a new murder mystery and a multi-time narrative.

The fourth season of the investigative anthology series, titled True Detective: Nightland, followed detectives Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro as they tried to solve the disappearance of six men at a research station in Alaska. Jodie Foster, Oscar winner for The Silence of the Lambs, and boxer Kalis Reis played Danvers and Navarro, respectively.

Fiona Shaw (Andor), Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who), John Hawkes (Deadwood), Finn Bennett (The Nevers), Anna Lambe (Three Pines), Aka Niviâna, Isabella Star Leblanc , and Joel D. Montgrand complete the cast of Nightland. The production was signed by Barry Jenkins, Oscar-winning director of Moonlight and recently responsible for the miniseries The Underground Railroad on Prime Video. Issa López is credited as showrunner and will continue in the role for the fifth season.

True Detective is an HBO series, and all four seasons are available on Max.
