In an interview with Collider during the Toronto Film Festival, Mike Flanagan revealed his "dream setting" for the adaptation of Carrie. It would be three seasons long. Flanagan said he sees the series as a trilogy.
"In my dream scenario, I think it's three seasons. I think Carrie has a wonderful three-part arc. It's a trilogy, really," said Flanagan, who did not elaborate on how he would divide this journey or what a second season would cover.
Flanagan said the team focused their efforts on making the first season work, avoiding thinking too far beyond it during production. "Right now, we're focused on making the first season happen," he commented. The audience response will determine if their bigger idea has a chance to develop.
The challenge of extending Carrie over three seasons is evident. Stephen King's novel has a definitive ending, and the most well-known adaptations have treated the story that way. Flanagan doesn't guarantee a different ending, but three seasons would allow for expanding Carrie's personal journey or shifting the focus beyond the book.
The first season brings Carrie into the social media age. After her father's death, the character leaves behind an isolated childhood and enters public school. Samantha Sloyan plays Margaret White, and the cast also includes Siena Agudong, Alison Thornton, Joel Oulette, Amber Midthunder, and Matthew Lillard.
Carrie premieres on Prime Video on October 7th.
