The plot is based on Sol Yurick's 1965 novel and the 1979 Paramount film. The story follows a fictional New York gang that must cross the city, from the Bronx to Coney Island, after being framed for the murder of a rival leader. The screenplay, music, and lyrics are by Miranda and Eisa Davis.
The production originated as a concept album in 2024, executive produced by Nas, and featured vocals from artists such as Ms. Lauryn Hill, Busta Rhymes, and Marc Anthony. Now, it takes to the stage under the direction of Jenny Koons and co-direction and choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler. Executive production is handled by Thomas Kail, Miranda, his father Luis A. Miranda Jr., and Jeffrey Seller.
In a statement, Miranda and Davis defined the work as a profoundly New York story, with a soundtrack that explores genres such as hip-hop, salsa, ska, and metal. "It's the soundtrack to something that is being born," the creators stated.
