'Coyote vs. Acme' Beats 'Spider-Man' With Historic U.S. Box Office Record

According to Deadline, Coyote vs. Acme debuted in second place at the United States box office, grossing $15.4 million over the weekend.

The film trailed only Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which brought in $22.2 million in its fifth week in theaters and reached $891.5 million domestically—and is now just steps away from becoming the highest-grossing film in U.S. box office history, a record currently held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Meanwhile, The Dog Stars, the new film from Ridley Scott, opened well below expectations. The movie grossed just $8 million, despite a production budget of $70 million. The result fell behind Coyote vs. Acme, which had around $10 million invested in marketing and benefited from strong fan support on social media.
