The franchise is set in 13th-century Japan, during the Mongol invasion of Tsushima Island. In the original game, the samurai Jin Sakai must abandon some of his training traditions to confront the invaders and protect his people. Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, which serves as the basis for the anime, is a multiplayer mode with supernatural elements inspired by Japanese folklore.

Saco participated in the English dubbing of the original game as Tomoe, an archer trained by Sensei Ishikawa. Fukumatsu is known for voicing Bomb in One-Punch Man.

The series will be directed by Takanobu Mizuno and produced by Kamikaze Douga studio. The script is written by Gen Urobuchi and Renji Oki, and the project brings together Aniplex and PlayStation Productions in production.
